What to do tonight
Find the filter before you do anything else. It lives in a slot near the furnace or behind a return grille on a wall, and the size is printed along the cardboard edge as a row of numbers. Write that size on a sticky note and stick it inside the furnace closet door, where the next person can read it without calling anyone. If the filter is gray all the way across, it has been working hard for a while, and that is the job you are looking at.
Local option: New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.
Turn the furnace off at its switch before you open anything. Then look at the arrow printed on the frame. It points in the direction the air travels, which is toward the furnace, so slide the new filter in with its arrow pointing the same way the old one did.
Do it yourself when
Swapping the filter is a small job. If the new one matches the size on the old frame, slides in without forcing, and the furnace runs without banging or stopping, you can do it in ten minutes with the furnace off. Dad may want to do it himself. Let him. Ask where the flashlight is and whether the old filter goes out with the trash or the recycling. Some fathers like a job like this, and it gives his hands something to do in a house that has gone quiet.
Call the furnace company when
A filter is not a service visit. A visit covers the parts you cannot see from the closet: the burners, the blower, the safety checks, the gas connection, and how the system starts up. If the furnace shuts off on its own, makes a new sound, or the filter gets dirty again much faster than the last one did, call the company and say so. Do not wait for a scheduled date to come around.
Compare the visit before you book it
If there is a service plan on paper in the kitchen drawer, read it before the visit date. Look for three things: what the visit includes, whether the filter is part of it or billed separately, and whether the plan renews on its own without a call. Ask each company to write down what the technician checked and what was replaced, and keep that page with the plan. Two companies can offer the same visit and describe very different work, so ask each one for the same written list before you choose.
When to ask for help
If the filter is hard to slide in, the slot looks damaged, or you cannot tell whether the size is right, stop and call a furnace company rather than forcing it. A filter that does not fit is a sign to have someone look, not a reason to bend the frame until it goes in. Leave the flashlight on the hook by the closet door, where you will want it next time.
